Seiðstaffs of the Völur: Excavating Norse Women's Ways

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

This visual talk begins with a brief look at the neolithic background, gyðjur on the Kivik stones, sun discs and women's belts, the Gundestrup cauldron and Gallehus horns. Then we scan the Edda and sagas in search of the völur (shamanic seeresses). Archaeology yields up their seiðstaffs (many with significant distaff symbolism) and other regalia, including the nine-cat-cart and ritual tapestries of Oseberg, amulets, and cannabis orhenbane. Iconography of metal figures, Gotland stones, Swedish runestones, pagan church sculptures -- and some intriguing woodcuts from Olaus Magnus.
